The film observes the emotional and interpersonal conflicts amongst the relatives of an old woman following her burial. With great skill and an unusual penchant for experimentation close to the end of his career, the director connects a dramatic structure based on multiple perspectives, documentary techniques and surprising, original sequences that deal with the death of the old woman from the perspective of a child in picture-book fashion. Im Kwon-Taek’s 96th film, FESTIVAL is auteur cinema operating at the highest level.
